Güne başlama geleneğimiz
genellikle şöyledir: ben erken kalkıp önce bir süre hobilerimle ilgilenirim-
genellikle animasyon.
Disney'in Alaaddin filminden: vezir Cafer gücü ele geçirmiş,
Ankara’daki
jandarma lojmanlarını benim üzerime göstermişler. Bu kadar da olmaz ki.”
Merhum Amiral nejat Tümer’in
Merhum Gen. Nurettin Ersin’in
Evren’in diğer damadı Erkan
Erkan
Gürvit’in MASAK’a yazdığı ve Sözcü’de de yayınlanan mektubunu aşağıda
paylaşıyorum.
Kenan Evren'in damadı Erkan Gürvit'in MASAK'a mektubu.
Aileler kendilerini
istedikleri kadar savunsunlar, isterlerse meseleyi yargıya götürsünler. Hatta
Mehmet Türker’in 1 Aralık

The early morning rituals at our home generally go like this: I get up early to occupy myself with my hobbies- usually my animation- and when my wife gets up, we prepare breakfast. While setting the table, I turn on the TV for the BBC children’s programs- and then my wife comes in and switches it to Kanal B, in time for some unappetizing news.
Of all the
channels one receives through regular means, like house antenna or the cable
services, Kanal B is the least
government influenced.[1]
It is broadcast by the Başkent University
of Ankara, hence the “B”. The founder and rector of this university has been
held in the Silivri prison- still without verdict- since April 13th, 2009, facing unclear
charges within the framework of the Ergenekon
“conspiracy” trials.[2]
So it was doubly shocking to hear, with my own ears, from the news broadcast of
that channel, the sheer wealth in property and fat bank accounts attributed to
the families of the four generals and one admiral who had conducted the intervention
of September
12th, 1980, the surviving two of whom are now being
tried for that action![3]
“Well, that‘s
another day shot!”, I thought!
This was the
morning news of November 28th, 2012; the staggering list went on and
on, the obvious implication being that the September 12th intervention, the
“coup” in more common parlance, was conducted for material gain, or if not
that, that the military men involved and their families are greedy and
unscrupulous enough to profit so shamelessly from the situation.
Frame from Disney's Aladdin. After Jaffar's access to power, the fallen Sultan is dressed up as a fool and strung up like a puppet. His henchman Iago entertains himself by stuffing crackers down his mouth. Hit them, now that they're down!
The very next day, the 29th, I rushed to see what Sözcü had to say about it- being the only newspaper that shows anything like support for those people who, whatever their faults in execution may have been, gave our country another lease of life through their daring action.[4]

The Committee for
Researching Financial Crime (MASAK[5])
had filed a report on the material wealth of the families and submittedtit to
the court. The front page of Sözcü
blames the lawyers of the many plaintiffs in the case for spreading a biased
interpretation of the actual report, but a more in-depth article (on page 14, by
Saygı Öztürk) claims the report itself is prejudiced.
According to claims, the daughter-in-law of the late General Sedat Celasun owns "28 five-story apartment buildings" comprising a total of "224 apartments" in Çankaya (Ankara). Mrs Füsun Celasun, the lady in question (occupation: pharmacist) disclaims all, stating she has "not a single apartment to her name," and "Neither does her husband", she adds.
"The daughter in law of Admiral Nejat Tümer is supposed to have “750 000 TL.” – about $420 000- in savings in an Istanbul bank (to this, one can easily say “so what? There are apartments on the market for twice as much, and more, and they are not without buyers!)”) and his previous daughter-in law has "four in the same branch" (and the point is...?)
As for the late General Nurettin Ersin, his son Oktay Ersin allegedly owns “169 villas in Bodrum”. and “an apartment building with 14 apartments” in Ankara. The only thing true here, according to the counterclaim by the family, is that the daughter (not son) Yıldız Ülgenalp owns one summer home in Bodrum, with the house number 16/9, which was somehow mutated to “169 villas”. The general’s daughter-in- law, Gülten Jülide Ersin, supposedly owns “14 apartment buildings” in Ankara.
As for the two surviving generals facing all the charges,
General Tahsin Şahinkaya‘s son-in-law is supposed to own “a tract of land that comprises a lumber factory in Gebze, 90 blocks of duplexes in Yalova, and three one-story offices.” The claim against his son is more modest: Serdar Şahinkaya apparently has an apartment in Kadıköy (as indeed we also do!).
Contrary to these claims of riches, according to Sözcü General Şahinkaya himself has had to vacate his apartment in Fenerbahçe (İstanbul) due to damage sustained in the earthquake [6]and move to lodgings provided by the military. If he is evicted from there, (as the eventual court verdict might demand- considering what has happenned to the Balyoz- “Sledgehammer” defendants![7]) he will be forced out of his only home. But no worry there, they will solve that problem by providing lodgings in prison!
General Kenan Evren’s son-in-law (Maksut Süleyman Göksu) is said to own: 3 buildings in Ankara’s upmarket Çankaya area, four plots in Gölbaşı, 10 in Hatay, 7 in İskenderun, and one each in Erzurum and Marmaris. As for his other son-in-law (Erkan Gürvit), he is said to own: 41 apartment blocks in Sarıyer (İstanbul) and a luxury apartment in ths Şişli (İstanbul), both very expensive districts

Mr Göksu says: "They say we own three apartment buildings in Ankara. "there are three buildings where we live, and in one of them is the flat where I live, and which I bought in 1996. Let them show me where all these buildings I own? There is some property inherited from my late mother in Erzurum and Hatay, but the inheritance is split 80-100 ways on all of them."
Mr. Gürvit shared with Sözcü the
letter he addressed to MASAK in which he gives the full list of his and his
wife’s real property, according to which the “41 apartment blocks” is totally
unfounded fiction. (Letter reproduced below.) He told Sözcü he is presently living in an apartment complex
composed of 41 apartment buildings; the report makes it out as if he owns all 41 buildings!
Erkan Gürvit’s letter to MASAK.[8]
According to Mehmet Türker’s article on in Sözcü on December 1st, the committe (MASAK) has acknowledged that the information in the report was exaggerated or untrue, and further, that it is a criminal offense to publish them. According to the same article, the pro- government press, so ready to make headlines of the slander, either relegated the confutations to the inside pages or not bothered at all.
Wherever you stand on the September 12 issue, you must agree that there is something horrifying in witnessing slander so openly practiced for ideological ends, by the very institutions that are there to protect us from injustice.

[4] Aydınlık, which offers the strongest opposition to the government, ignored
the topic. Having so long railed against “September 12”, the Aydınlık newspaper/Ulusal channel front is not about to make an about-face. . I
remember once hearing Sabahatin Önkibar on Ulusal
daring the government to put the generals of September 12th on trial.
Besides hosting a program on Ulusal,
Önkibar is also a columnist in Aydınlık.
The Aydınlık/Ulusal front is openly
supportive of the imprisoned generals and officers of today (see “TheSledgehammer Verdicts”, 22 September-Eylül- 2012, and “Reacting to theSledgehammer Verdicts”, 26 September-Eylül- 2012), but does not extend its
sympathy to the generals of “September 12th”.
Strangely, General Necdet Özel, the present chief of
staff, is roundly and harshly criticised by exactly the same circles for stearing
clear of involvement in politics.. On April 29th 2012, an article in the
Cumhuriyet newspaper, columnist Bekir Coşkun wrote a parable about a dog named
Paşa (“General”) content to do its
master’s bidding and wear his collar in return for being fed, This was an open jab at Chief of Staff Gen. Özel for
his non-political approach, and elicited an offended response from the
General Staff website.

TO
THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE OF THE TURKISH REPUBLIC, COMMITTEE FOR RESEARCHING
FINANCIAL CRIME
The
newspapers of 28 11 2012 have reported that
I own a building with 41 apartments in Sarıyer and a luxury apartment in Şişli
including the surrounding lot.
We
do not know the truth of how this happened, but the information that has
reached the public is completely false. A simpe check of land registry data
would have sufficed to bring out to truth. Though I am in no way required to do
so, I am now declaring all the real estate registered in my and my wife’s
names.
a.
Istanbul, 1.Levent, apartment flat, 3+1, 120 sq. m., (belonging to my wife).
b.
Two apartment flats in Sarıyer, İstinye, one belonging to my wife, joint
ownership by both of us for the other, 150 sq. m., 3+1.
c.An
apartment flat, jointly owned with my
wife, in Şişli Bomonti, 118 sq. m., 2+1.
d.A
three-story apartment building in Bodrum, belonging to my wife, 270 sq. m. (The
contractor provided separate deeds for each floor, so from the deeds, it
appears as if she owns three homes. However, we have sought declaratory at a
Bodrum court which has certified that, since it is used by a single family, it
counts as one home.)
This
is the complete list of real estate owned by myself and my wife. We own no
other property in Turkey or anywhere in the world. This does not mean we will
be limited by them in the future. On the other side of the coin, it is not a
crime for one to invest one’s savings in propery. This information is being
used to launch vulgar attacks on our family and our family’s elder.
In
conclusion, I request that you immediately make public this true list of real
estate owned by myself and my wife.
