BALYOZA BALYOZ-HAMMERING THE SLEDGEHAMMER

TÜRKÇE (For English please scroll down.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y4fzd4hK_c&feature=youtu.be

Oradan Beşiktaş’a devam ettik ve Vardiya Bizde etkinliğine vaktinde ulaştık. Onların eylemleri hep sakin ve sosyal toplantı havalıdır, dünyayı sarsacak nitelikte değildir. Yağmur yağıyordu, şemsiyeler altında sakin sakin pankartlar tutuldu, merhabalaşıldı, sohbet edildi, kameralara poz verildi.

Ciddi mesajlar, kibar protesto! Vardiya Bizde, Beşiktaş, 26 Ocak 2013.

Vardiya Bizde hanımlarından biri Orhan Aykut’un anlattıklarına dayanarak yapılan suç duyurusuyla ilgili bir bildlri okudu. Bir güzel sürpriz 12 Ocak 2013’de Kadıköy’deki “Silivri Tutsaklarıyla Dayanışma” eyleminde tanışmış olduğumuz şair beyefendiyle tekrar karşılaşmamız oldu. (Bkz. “Kahraman Olmak”, 17 Ocak 2013.)
Gittim sordum,  “amcam” dedi. Balyoz davası kapsamında 18 seneye mahkûm edilen Tümamiral Semih Çetin’in resmini tutuyordu. Amcasıyla gururlanıyor olmalı, amcası da yeğeniyle gururlanabilir bence!
Amca-yeğen.
(Görüntü kendi objektifimden)

Hasdal cezaevinde tutulanTümamiral Çetin’in tecrübelerini anlattığı Bir İhanetin Öyküsü ismli kitap son günlerde yayınlanarak piyasaya çıktı.

Of all the the strange and curious things that have been happening in my country, there are three that particularly bother me, on which I have been focusing in my blog. They are:

-The gratuitous arrest of intellectuals, journalists, academicians and officers with rigged up charges as a step in the transformation of the country, through the complicity of an infiltrated security and judicial system.[1] (I should include in this the arrests among the youth![2])

-The government-endorsed rise in fundamentalist Islam and the trend towards a return to theocracy, which entails, among other things, a suppression of the rights of women.[3]

-The transformation of the educational system to open the way to religious brainwashing from an early age.[4]

I have mentioned these over and over as a kind of personal testament and a record of my thoughts in these very turbulent times[5].

That the government is selling national assets bit by bit, is creating havoc with the environment, that it is beating war drums in regard to Syria along U.S. lines while somehow sounding more eager than its master, that it has opened the way to the partition of the country by giving a green light to an independent Kurdish state, all this and more I leave largely to others[6]. The Turkish Republic can easily survive all of that, even the painful loss of a chunk of its territory to a new country, but with an infiltrateded judiciary, a return to theocracy, with young minds enslaved, with fundamentalism- even a capitalist endorsed fundamentalism- the Turkish Republic is dead! We are dead!

The harrassment of officers through several fabulous plot allegations have led to hundreds of arrests, internments, extended trials and very heavy convictions on dubious evidence.[7]

Then someone called Orhan Aykut came out of the woodwork and publicly declared, as an eyewitness,  that the cruicial evidence that started the Balyoz (“Sledgehammer”) witchhunt was all doctored, fabricated and planted.[8] Aydınlık ran a series of interviews with the man in January 2013.
Aydınlık, January 16th, 2013.
"We took the suitcase from Pala, we produced the CD's in Ankara." Aykut is seen on the right with photo of İskender Pala- also seen extreme left- columnist for Zaman (a pro-AKP paper like Taraf) and ex-officer discharged on grounds of "reactionary activity". Next to him, Ihsan Arslan, AKP member of parliament for Diyarbakır at the time.

I saw Aykut talking on Ulusal[9], perfectly casual and calm about it all. Aykut is a shadowy figure, served time in prison before entering the back hallways of power. He says the chief of police intelligence even gave him a secret service identity card (“with which I could go everywhere”) and was apparently close at hand during the fabrication and falsification process.[10]

The Vardiya Bizde (“Now It’s Our Shift”) platform is an initiative of the wives and families of officers under arrest, facing trial, or already convicted on various unconvincing charges including but not limited to the Ergenekon and Balyoz (“Sledgehammer”) plot allegations.[11] As soon as the news regarding Orhan Aykut spilling the beans reached the media, the Vardiya ladies immediately took the matter in hand; on January 21st 2013 relatives of officers convicted for “Sledgehammer” allegations lodged criminal complaints with the State Prosecutors in Istanbul and Ankara.[12]

On January 22nd yet another case against officers simmering in İzmir exploded into the headlines; the courts there had accepted the indictment of 357 supects, mostly officers, on espionage charges mixed with sex scandals. 310 of them are officers, both retired and active. 88 of them will be held in custody during trials. Admiral of the Fleet Nusret Güner resigned in protest on the 24th. The Aydınlık of February 4th 2012 reports a spate of resignations among fighter pilots. What with the arrests, indictments and resignations we hardly have  the officers to command the ships, fly the planes, and guide the army- and all this while the government is gearing up for war with Syria on American behest![13]

The regular “Silent Scream” activity of the Vardiya Bizde (“Now It’s Our Shift”) platform, held every Saturday, had a special meaning on January 26th. We had attended only once, on November 3rd 2012, but since there was a special appeal for the 26th, we set out. On the way we made an attempt to lend our support to another protest action. That was a group demanding freedom for Prof. Dr. Fatih Hilmioğlu, academician, former rector of İnönü University in Malatya, arrested during the Ergenekon roundup of April 13th, 2009 (one of a total of 39 arrests, including Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal, founder and Rector of Başkent University, Ankara[14]) and like Haberal he has been held in custody in the Silivri prison complex evet since. The trials are unconcluded so there has been no verdict. He suffers from cancer and the protest action was a call for freedom, and if not freedom, at least to be allowed to leave the prison, and be present only when the court is in session, which is indeed legally possible but is denied a great number of defendants.

Demonstration for Hilmioğlu at the Pera district, Istanbul, January 26th, 2013.
(Image from the social media.)
We reached the Pera district, where the demonstration was held, too late: only a small number of demonstrators were left, just a few steps away from another group of demonstrators. Someone said those belonged to the “Saturday Mothers”[15], a group that have been assembling since May 27th 1995 demanding a research into the fate of relatives who have disappeared in custody. I can’t pin their grievances on the AKP government, which only came to power on November 3rd 2002, more than seven years after the start of the demonstrations; the military intervention of September 12th, 1980 was fifteen years before that, so I have no choice but to admit that rough handling and shadowy methods have always been a feature of this country and share some of the blame for the AKP election victories.
Remainder of the "Saturday Mothers", Pera district, Istanbul,  January 26th 2013...

...and across from them, stragglers from the "Freedom for Fatih Hilmioğlu" demonstration.
(Images from my own camera.)
From there we moved on to Beşiktaş, this time arriving punctually for the Vardiya action. Typically genteel, too polite to bother anybody or make a mark, the wives and relatives held up their placards and photographs of their jailed relatives, conversed politely with each other, and posed for the cameras.

"The Sledgehammer Case is Digital Terror."
(Images from my own camera.)

One lady read out a demand for a reopening of the case based on Orhan Aykut’s revelations. A highlight was the presence of my “hero” from the Kadıköy demonstration of January 12th 2013.[16] This is a middle aged gentleman who creates his own little gems of poetry and delivers them with much vigor and absolutely no self-consciousness during these demonstrations. You can see him in the videoclip above.

Especially touching for me was a little girl quietly holding up the photograph of a naval officer. It turned out to be her uncle: Vice Admiral Semih Çetin, convicted to 18 years in connection with the Balyoz (“Sledgehammer”) plot allegation and incarcerated in Hasdal prison.

Proud uncle, proud niece!
(Image from my own camera- proud photographer!)

Like many other inmates, Admiral Çetin has written a book in prison and it has just been published. The title is “Tale of a Betrayal” (Bir İhanetin Öyküsü).

The following is a quote from his defense statement during his trial at Silivri on August 18th, 2011:[17]

“We are going through a period of betrayal committed by a gang that has sunk so low as to conspire against its own armed forces. We have been taken prisoner in our own country.”

DELAWARE????

TÜRKÇE (For English text please scroll down.)

Just a few of the Delaware/Wilmington fleet at the Kalamış marina, İstanbul.

ENGLISH

In Istanbul, at Kalamış cove- an upmarket area on the Asian side- there is a marina where many private vessels, mostly rather costly pleasure boats, are docked. Surrounded by a fence and with its own heliport, it also enjoys some nice amenities close at hand such as fashionable cafe-bars, expensive restaurants, a Sushi place, the fashionable Edwards for clothing, and the recently completed Wyndham Hotel (five stars).

The amenities of the Kalamış Marina area.

Bring your helicopter along if you like!

The marina is on our habitual strolling itinerary, it is a pleasant area on the way to a very nice park, and we like looking at the boats. In doing so, we noticed that a surprisingly large number display the Star-Spangled Banner of the US. This is odd, considering the vast distance separating Istanbul from the US coast- the Atlantic Ocean and most of the length of the Mediterranean lie between. Their sizes are much smaller than what one would expect for such a great journey, and I always see them docked, so probably they aren't taken out too often. Even stranger, most have a place called Delaware as port of registration, and those few remaining ones bear the name Wilmington instead.

So natural curiosity moved us to get our atlas out. We found a state Delaware at the estuary of a river of the same name. There's a Delaware City inside this state. The neighbouring state to the north is Pennsylvania, whose only access to the sea is by this river, which constitutes its border with New Jersey.

Just north of the Delaware state border, inside Pennsylvania State and close to Philadelphia, a bit inland according to the map, there is a town called Delaware. As for Wilmington, there's a coastal town right in that area.

Now when you say "Pennsylvania" in Turkey today, it brings to mind one thing: Fethullah Gülen, the mullah in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania, who wields enormous political influence in spiritual guise from his ranch that doubles as cult center.

Is it my paranoia or does this US flotilla have something to do with the business circles that Mr. Gülen has pulled into his orbit?

UĞUR MUMCU'YU ANMA- REMEMBERING A DEAD JOURNALIST

TÜRKÇE (For English text please scroll down.)

Sadık Gürbüz’den sözleri güncelleştirilmiş Ankara Türküsü’nü ve Selda Bağcan’dan Aşık Mahsuni Şerif'in Sarı Saçlım Mavi Gözlüm’ü aşağıda paylaşıyorum.

Uğur Mumcu was a journalist-writer who stepped on a lot of toes with his articles and books. That’s why there were, and still are, a lot of rumors and assumptions regarding his murder twenty years ago. He was victim of a car bomb on January 24th 1993; pieces of his car and of his body were literally scatterd on the street in front of his home in Ankara.

Several organizations claimed the act: Vikipedi (Turkish Wikipedia)[1] quotes “Islamic Movement” (İslami Hareket), İBDA-C[2], Hizbullah, and the PKK There were a number of convictions but many people are dissatisfied with the results and suspect CIA and Mossad connections in the murder. The government’s prosecution has even attempted a linkup with the fictitive Ergenekon network .[3] The general consensus among government opponents is that the murder has connections with some or several of the powers, be they fundamentalist-Islamist or capitalist-imperialist, that have brought the AKP to the head of our country.

The statute of limitations on the Mumcu murder was to run out on this past January 24th, and there was an effort by his supporters and followers, mainly opponents of the AKP regime, to extend the 20-year limit for murder enquiries, or even lift that limit completely. Understandably, the day of remembrance, organized annually, had a more empathic feel this time around. Activities were organized at various centers around the country, and in the person of Mumcu, respects were paid to all murdered or jailed journalists and intellectuals.

We attended the activity held at the Caddebostan Cultural Center[4] close by. It was organized by the Municipality of Kadıköy: the mayor being from the opposition CHP[5], it is understandable that this Municipality should sponsor an anti-government event. Entrance was free and Mayor Selami Öztürk made an introductory speech.

The medium-sized auditorium was full, with people sitting in the aisles. The Kadıköy district is a stronghold of Kemalist secularism and feels more and more isolated in a rising fundamentalist flood.[6]

The evening started with video presentations about Mumcu, projected from files stored in a computer, and as I have come to expect from too much reliance on computer technology, it was disastrous; the sound was distorted and the audience soon rebelled with hoots and jeers, indignant of what they took as disrespect for Mumcu’s memory. People also have pent up anger for the CHP for its inneffective opposition that goes as far as complicity.[7]

Mayor Öztürk calmed the storm, wisely choosing to praise the headstrong spirit of Kadıköy, unwilling to accept nonsense, and I am inclined to agree- if only because I desperately need something to be proud of.

There was a visiting guest[8] talking about the martyred journalist, followed by concerts by two fine performers and their bands: Sadık Gürbüz and Selda Bağcan. They performed a selection of revolutionary and patriotic songs (incompatible genres before 1980, nice to hear them together now- I think!) Especially moving were patriotic songs sung with audience participation, generating a feeling of solidarity in the face of clear and present danger. Sadık Gürbüz performed the traditional Ankara Türküsü (“Ankara Song”) with a twist; originally a song of victory and a praise of Kemal Atatürk, the words were in this case modified to fit modern circumstances. Selda Bağcan sang the popular Sarı Saçlım, Mavi Gözlüm (“My Blond Haired, Blue Eyed One”), a song of longing for the national hero Kemal Atatürk (who was blond and had blue eyes).
"Blond and blue-eyed one"- portrait by Mihri Müşfik Hanım (a.k.a. Mihri Rasim), lady painter (detail).
These two songs were sung together with the audience, which I found quite poignant. I  share those two songs here (videoclips above).

The lyrics can do with some clarification: Mustafa Kemal started on his great quest to liberate and reform the country with a journey by ship along the Black Sea coast, disembarking at Samsun.[9] Hence the line:

“...Bu gemi, bu Karadeniz...”

(“This ship, this Black Sea”)

And

“...bir daha gel, gel Samsun’dan...”

(“...come, come once again from Samsun...”)

calling the departed hero to come and save the nation again, as he had done in its darkest hour.

"...this ship...", the Bandırma.
“Ghazi” (one who has seen battle, a war veteran), “Pasha” (general) “Mustafa Kemal” and “Atatürk” (Mustafa Kemal's surname after the introduction of surnames in 1934) all refer to the same person.

"Mahsuni", the name of the bard who wrote the song, appears within the last stanza in accordance with Turkish poetic tradition.

[6] The government insists on building yet another showpiece mosque in the district’s Göztepe park; the residents have so far held the project at bay by petitioning against it. The park is inexplicably revamped each year; right now it is full of construction equipment. Each time we pass by, we warily check for excavatiions for a foundation. There is news that the construction of a mosque of over 2500 m2 in a park of 8000 m2 was passed in  the Metropolitan City Council on November 22nd,  2012 by the AKP majority. The project had already been contested by residents and eventually suspended seven years ago by the Council of State but here it is again, reheated and re-served.

The government’s Urban Renovation scheme, ostensibly to make the city more earthquake-safe, has turned into a money making scheme for contractors and property owning residents who stand to make a buck through ownership of more flats in higher blocks. A secondary effect of the new high-rises would be a demographic change through an insurge of a nouveau-riche class that owes its wealth to the government. This would be a very effective way of taking over a district that has long been a stronghold of an ideology that the AKP is systematically working to undermine.

Hi-rises in the "eartquake-safe" Urban Renovation era, blasting all previous building codes! Viewed from the Göztepe park, undergoing renovations yet again and standing to lose almost a third of its area to an unwanted new mosque. (These are the same buildings that appear in footnote 10 of "Being a Hero", 17 January-Ocak 2013.)
