TO THE BALLOTS YET AGAIN

ENGLISH

Whatever the agressive languages of the government and the opposition may lead us to believe, the tension between the different social groups has been much reduced over then last few years. The rivalry between the erstwhile partners, Gülen and Erdoğan, and the consolidation of power by the latter, really seems to have brought a reduction of excesses of the AKP regime. While it is true that the big wheels of Gülen’s power apparatus in Turkey (like ex-Vice-President Bülent Arınç, ex-Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and ex- President Abdullah Gül) have never been affected by the roundup of adherents of the Gülen cult, it really seems the reduction of Gülen’s influence and the purging of cult members and adherents from the Turkish system has brought a positive change.

On the negative side, Erdoğan’s consolidation of power involved a regime change that bodes ill for the future- a so-called “Presidential System” that is tailor-made to keep Erdoğan in power for as long as possible, with little concern for legitimate, democratic succession!

The inherent weakness of the new system became perfectly evident in the last municipal elections. The President openly sided with and campaigned for the AKP candidate Binali Yıldırım. (Indeed, under the new system, the President remains the head of the party!)

AKP remained the top vote-puller but lost the office of mayor in every major city- most painfully in capital Ankara and mega-metropolis Istanbul! (Erdoğan’s meteoric rise to power had come after a stint as the mayor of Istanbul, during which time he had been hosted in the White House by none other than George Bush Jr.)

Days, even weeks after Ekrem Imamoğlu's won the office of mayor, President Erdoğan and protege Binali Yıldırım were thanking the public for their election victory.
(Image from my own camera.)

The AKP, backed by President Erdoğan himself, demanded- and got- recounts in many areas, The results hardly changed. Reluctantly giving up on Ankara, the AKP insisted on nothing less than renewed elections in Istanbul. The victorious rival, CHP’s Ekrem İmamoğlu, can enjoy his shaky seat until June 23rd, when the citizens of Istanbul are once more called to the ballot box.

Sibling rivalry: little Binali Yıldırım and Ekrem İmamoğlu bickering over the city of Istanbul (both yelling "MIIINE!") while President Erdoğan (a.k.a. "The Long Man") orders İmamoğlu to hand over the toys.
("Give them to yor brother, Ekrem!")
The AKP’s staggering record of election victories since 2002 have always had a shadowy side, with continous allegations of foul play. In the early days, the party had the clear backing of the US, and it is not hard to imagine some US know-how at work in boosting the party’s rapid rise to power just months after its founding. A mysterious power cut in the Adana area during the local elections of March 30th 2014 were attributed by authorities to a cat slipping into a power station, and the interfering cat became a running joke afterwards. Unused ballot slips have routinely been found lying around after elections, inviting speculations as to their purpose.

The April 16th 2017 referendum for constitutional change, introducing a “Presidential System” that would give President Erdoğan unprecedented powers, was preceded by a blatantly unfair period of propaganda: Erdoğan’s AKP used all the means of the state to sell the concept, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım enthusiastically endorsed the change that would permanently anull his office, and supposed “opposition” MHP under the grotesquely unprincipled Devlet Bahçeli backed Erdoğan’s cause. Those opposed to the regime change were left with limited means to challenge the Erdoğan-AKP (plus MHP) power apparatus.

On voting day the internet immediately filled up with visual records of cheating- some so brazen the culprits didn’t even hide it before the camera, some so shameless, they shot selfies doing it. The "High Election Board" (Yüksek Seçim Kurulu) abruptly decided to accept unstamped envelopes, though the Board’s own regulations would have rendered them invalid, and reportedly, some 2,5 million were accepted. The controversial “Presidential System” passed by the narrowest of margins- %51.4 “for”  versus %48.6 "against”. Crowds began to assemble before the Election Board to protest but their respective parties discouraged an escalation of the tense situation. (See: “Vox Populi?”, 12 June-Haziran 2017)

Planted before our TV sets on the night of the recent Municipal Elections (March 31st, 2019), we were all watching the AKP lead as expected when CHP candidate Ekram İmamoğlu interrupted the broadcast to announce that the official tally of the state-run Anatolian Agency conflicted with the CHP’s own bookkeeping. After some hesitation the Election Board had to concede. There can be little doubt that AKP candidate  Binali Yıldırım would have easily been lifted to victory if not for the meticulous attention of CHP’s team of observers. The incident was foreshadowed in the run-up to the presidential and parliamentary election of June 24th, 2018: during a broadcast on a pro-government channel, the results of the upcoming general elections were accidentally flashed on the screen- four days before anyone went to the ballot box! See: https://odatv.com/vid_video.php?id=8F8GD

I have no reason to have confidence in the AKP. But that doesn’t mean I have much confidence in the CHP either. The AKP’s basic arguments against the CHP, that the party is ready to to make deals with Kurdish seperatists, that it is endorsing the HDP, that it is arguing for the legitimacy of the PYD though it is blatantly the Syrian version of the PKK, are all essentialy true. Never mind that the AKP has been guilty of all the same before the breakup with Gülen- these are all in line with US wishes; the AKP was created specifically to satisfy those wishes and the CHP is obviously courting US support by signaling it is ready to do the same.

The CHP’s call for “justice”, though legitimate enough, also includes Gülen’s

operatives who are now paying for the part they played in the Ergenekon and Balyoz (“Sledgehammer”) show trials and the widespread, underhanded program to dismantle the secular, nationalist Turkish Republic.

The only plausible alternative to the rivalry between the AKP (and partners) vs. the CHP (and partners) is Doğu Perinçek’s Vatan party. Once known as the Labor or more literally Worker’s Party, it changed its name in 2015 in a hope to attract voters spooked by its too “communist” image. The party has its own newspaper (Aydınlık), its own TV and radio channels (Ulusal), so manages to survive. Vatan speaks for an uncompromising national stance, at odds with US interests; indeed several party officials, including leader Perinçek himself, have been jailed by the Ergenekon judges with very long sentences, regaining freedom only after the breakup of the Erdoğan-Gülen alliance. (See: "Melting the Mountain of Iron", 4 November-Kasım 2014.) Perinçek’s defence during the Ergenekon trials has become a classic; he would have been serving life had the Erdoğan- Gülen alliance gone on.

The solution to the Vatan nuisance has been to ignore it; the mainstream media act as if it doesn’t exist, not having a single member in parliament makes the party ineligible for state aid so it must always turn to its supporters, so the party never scrapes more than %1, %1.5. It must be said that Vatan often acts as its own worst enemy by acting as an apologist for all the excesses of China, North Korea, and Russia- including the Soviet era!

Though ignored by the media, Erdoğan and his advisors seem to heed Vatan’s views and opinions, and when they do, Vatan supports their decisions, which lead to the spreading accusation that Perinçek has become pro-Erdoğan.

Vatan's Ilker Yücel (left) still insists on his candidacy, here
endorsed by party leader Doğu Perinçek.
(Image from the media.)
Though other contenders have pulled out to leave the AKP and CHP fight it out for Istanbul, Vatan has decided to run again in the re-vote of the Istanbul Municipal Elections. A fourth bidder, also ignored totally by the media, is the Saadet party candidate Necdet Gökçınar, condemned in advance to be an also-ran.

Of course, none of this should have anything to do with municipal elections, which should be about how our towns and cities are run. But that wouldn’t be Democracy alla Turca, would it? Everything has to be turned into a matter of life and death!

The elections are scheduled for the 23rd. With such a buildup, who knows to what kind of a day will we awake on the 24th? There are rumors that the US is hoping for widespread protests in case of an AKP victory, riots and revolution even, and if all else fails even a chance to interfere! With its involvement in Syria, Eastern Mediterranean, slavish support of Israel, meddling in Ukraine, a wary eye on Russia, and buildup for an armed conflict with Iran, the US won’t just let Turkey choose its own path- not any more than it is willing to allow Venezuela! My hope is that the Turkish people are no longer inclined to go at each others' throats to satisfy the ambitions of politicians.

It seems Perinçek is right: when it comes down to it, this isn’t a matter of CHP vs AKP, or the Seculars vs Erdoğan, but the Nation vs the US!

Şimdi Cumhurbaşkanı Erdoğan'a cambaz ipinde yürümek düşüyor.

ENGLISH:

Rampant materialism has been fostered in Turkey by a religiously oriented party that makes a big fuss about piety- ironic isn't it? It is during the 17 year AKP rule that shopping centers and highrises have sprung up like mushrooms, and people have been encouraged to spend- banks raining credit cars on them to make sure they play along even without funds in reserve. To finance this show of affluence, the government has been selling off national assets over the

years, so that there's hardly anything left to sell. Buoyed by the neo-Ottoman arrogance it propagates, the government maintains a myth of a return to glory while in fact the cost of all this show of luxury and power have made the country ever more dependent, ever more at the mercy of the states and centers of interest that hold the fountainheads. (See: "House of Cards", 23 Ağustos-August 2018).

As we grew drunk with the new lifestyle, hypnotized with illusions of greatness, all the while accusing the other political party for what we took to be wrong, we did not see how ugly we were all getting. The Kemalists detest the AKP for its retrograde Islamist agenda, but they did not hesitate to rush to benefit from AKP's "Urban Renewal" program (a thinly disguised money making scheme, knocking down older buildings to build "safer" ones, three times as high). We have built a hell of highrises and deadlocked traffic, and managed to believe it's paradise. (See. "2018-Quo Vadis", 21 Aralık-December 2017)

The "closed" Islamist and "open" Kemalist have made truce, having found their common denominator in a pseudo-sophisticated haughtiness as marketed by the capitalist system.
(Image from my own camera.)
Now President Erdoğan must walk a tightrope- maintain a defiant stance against the US on the matter of Syrian unity and independence (the US- and also Israel and the West in general wish a Kurdish state in the north, along the Turkish frontier, which Turkey sees as a recipe for the accelerating continuation of PKK terror) while the faltering economy puts the country at the mercy of the very powers against which we have to maintain that defiant stance. Erdoğan must propagate the illusion of a sound economy and a powerful state while at the same time asking for the nation to rally together to save that very same economy.

We chose the economy as the theme of our seasonal greeting this year because it is so topical. The sorry state of the economy is our own doing- and a downfall that was totally predictable! The drawing is not just a criticism of our consumerism, our addiction to the luxuries we have grown used to, but also a reminder that we hardly produce any of it ourselves! Never mind that some are international brands that are marketed all over the world, there are others we have simply given up on. For a land famous for its tobacco, we no longer have a domestic cigarette brand! We buy back our tobacco at a higher price, rolled up and packaged, and then let it go up in smoke. We were known for our textiles, but this government closed down the venerable state-run Sümerbank, which produced quality materials at an affordable price.

For the characters in the drawing we intentionally chose AKP types because (a) it was the AKP that insisted on the neo-Liberal policies that created the illusion of wealth while offering national resources and institutions to all bidders and sinking the country into debt, (b) it is the AKP electorate that believes in the illusion of Islamic piety and a neo-Ottoman
"United Struggle against Inflation."
regeneration that the AKP fosters, remaining blind to how feeble the country is becoming and (c) it is the AKP government that is asking the nation to rally together to fight the monster of inflation.

But we are past pointing fingers now; we are not accusing the government or the population, whatever the political conviction. We are just showing the state of affairs as they stand- and that itself shows the way to salvation: less materialism, less fake piety, less obsession with expensive brand names, more domestic production, more self sufficiency, and a fair pay for a fair day's work!

İSKAMBİL KÂĞIDINDAN GÖKDELEN

TÜRKÇE (For English, see "House of Cards")

4 Ağustos 2018- Arjantin'de bir arkadaştan:

Merhaba. Sadece meraktan soruyorum, Türkiye'de neler oluyor?
12 000 km. uzaktan beri bizim ekonomimizi etkileyen krizden bahsediyor herkes.

Görünüşe bakılırsa dünyanın her tarafında aynı tarife kullanılıyor. Ve şu saçmalığa bak, biz Türkiye'den sadece televizyon dizileri ithal etmekle kalmıyoruz- en büyük buzdolabı imalatçılarından Arjantin'in yıllanmış çokuluslu şirketi Siam 100 çalışanını işten çıkarıyor çünkü Türkiye'den buzdolabı ithal edecekmiş... Ekonomimiz çöküyor, birçok sıkıntımız ortak: bütün milli fikirlerin ve problemlerimize çözüm teşebbüslerinin bastırılması, ABD'nin ana hedefinin bizim kaynaklarımız olması, 12 yıl boyunca bizi dünyadaki ekonomik fırtınalardan korumuş olan iç pazar ekonomisi için ümit kalmaması. Yerel tarım üreticilerinin ürünlerini istedikleri yere satıp dolarlarını istedikleri yere göndermelerine izin veren aptal hükümetimiz şimdi dolar kıtlığı çekiyor; yerel üreticilerein ve madencilerin vergilerini düşürdü, pazarları hertaraftan gelen ithalata açtı. Sonuç endüstrinin can çekişmesi, döviz kıtlığı, ve IMF'nin geri gelmesi.

Merhaba... tabii, yap. Eğer cumhurbaşkanımızın (Mauricio Macri) Panama Belgeleri'nde gözüktüğünü ama bundan hiç bir sonuç çıkmadığını (Panama Papers= yüksek meblalarda para ve vergi kaçırma skandalı), dünyanın en yoz üç cumhurbaşkanından biri sayıldığını ve IMF sayesinde rekor hızla güneyin Yunanistanı olma yolunda olduğumuzu da ilave edersen bana uyar. Kendine iyi bak.

HOUSE OF CARDS

ENGLISH (Türkçe için bkz. "İskambil Kâğıdından Gökdelen")

Aug 14th, 2018- From a friend in Argentina:

Hi .... Just out of curiosity: I´m wondering what the hell is happening over in Turkey. Everyone is talking about a crisis that is affecting our economy, 12.000 k away. The truth is that you have the number one devaluated currency in the world (45%) and we have the second one (37%). Our case is as a result of the neo-liberal policies applied to a country which had -up to December 2015- only 6% unemployment, an industry and internal market thriving, plus only 40% of its GDP in external debt. Now we are literally falling apart, with an unprecedented growth of debt and poverty. If you could make a summary of what is going on in your country, so as to try to understand how your crisis can affect us, since we are the two most fragile economies in the world at the moment, so they say... I hope you ... are doing well, despite this situation. Take care!

... the neo-Liberal policies you mention have been in practice for years, the Turkish government was being generously fed by the US, providing us with all the appearance and trappings of increasing affluence. The AKP government, originally endorsed by the US, has been included in (but was not restricted to) a project for the re-arrangement of the Middle-East, its regimes, its borders (including ours), to fit US and Israeli interests. The project (the Greater Middle East Project) called for the transformation of Turkey from a secular national state into a theocratic religious community with no national interest in mind and ready to follow any spiritual leader in whatever direction to which that leader points. The first candidate for that position was (and is) a renegade imam named  Fethullah Gülen living in Pennsylvania- a

willing CIA puppet with a sacred status. The role of the AKP and (then) Prime Minister Erdoğan had been to help the Gülen cult infiltrate the judiciary, police, military, press and academic world, and round up all defenders of the secular republic on trumped up charges. This went on until the Gezi riots of 2013, after which the US

tried to get rid of Erdoğan.

But Erdoğan fought back, declared old partner Gülen an enemy, and departed from the U.S. policy of erasing national sentiments. The lenient attitude toward the PKK also changed, turning over US plans in Syria and Iraq, as well as southwest Turkey!

Left: PKK "checkpoint" well inside Turkish borders, in or before August 2015.
Right: Diyarbakır Sur after the crackdown, December 2015.
(Image from the media.)

With this change Erdoğan's popularity skyrocketed. The US attempted to bring Erdoğan down with a coup (2016), through Gülen's influence on members who had infiltrated the Forces over the years. Erdoğan emerged even stronger.

Left: The bloody night of the failed coup, July 15th 2016, engineered by the US through
devotees of the Gülen cult in the Turkish Armed Forces.
Right: The victorious Erdoğan defying the world in the aftermath: "You cannot make us (me) bow our (my) head(s), you cannot make us (me) bend our (my) knee(s), you cannot succeed!" (The missing pronoun makes for the intentional ambiguity.) The Islamist turning Nationalist.

Now he has become President, with powers that office never had. The US, under

the bullyish Trump, is now trying to use Turkey's vulnerable economy to reduce Erdoğan to submission. The latest argument is over an American priest named Brunson who was arrested in 2016 as a "spy", for alleged involvement in the coup; the trial is still going on.

August 14th 2018- from my friend in Argentina to me:

Gosh... well, it seems the recipe is similar all over the world. And absurdly enough, we are not only importing soap operas from Turkey, also one of the biggest manufactures of fridges, the old Argentinian multinational Siam, is firing 100 employees to start importing fridges from Turkey... Our economy is crumbling, many things in common: the suppression of all national ideas or attempts at a solution of our problems, our resources as the main goal of USA and no chances of an internal market which was what saved our economy from all storms around the world for twelve years. Our absurd government has a lack of dollars after allowing producers to sell their crops and send their dollars wherever they please, they reduced taxes to producers and to the mining business, and opened up our market to all imports from anywhere. The result being a dying industry, lack of foreign currency and a return of the IMF. God save us... Take care, now I have a clearer view of what´s going on...

:

It seems our gobernantes is trying to use the Turkish situation to tell us that the economy is crumbling all over the world, which is not true...

:

But more than one country suffers from the U.S. using the Dollar as a weapon. Our neighbors Russia and Iran are both suffering from U.S. sanctions, as we are. In our case, it is more offensive because we are supposed to be allies. If we a-move out of Iraq and Syria, or better still, follow the US policies there, b- allow an independent Kurdistan in the area, part of it to be carved out of Turkey, c- give up on Cyprus, d- give up on our rights in the Mediterranean e- join in sanctions on Iran, even contribute to a military operation against it, f- give up on planned arms purchases from non-NATO countries and g- kiss and make up with Gülen and allow his minions back into positions of power and influence, the dollars will come back rolling in and we will once again be lulled into an impression of power.

Sorry for my misspellings, Android attempts to turn what I write into Spanish 😂

I see the situation. I'm afraid that over here, these gang of CEOs in power is just using the situation to convince people that they're not clumsy, it's just a "world crisis". The truth is that our debt has gone up to 80% of our GDP, they have offered our resources as guarantee of payment, which means that the second largest lithium deposit in the world could end up in foreign hands.

We have a whole history of the sort over here. Right wing in Argentina means "I work for foreign interests, aka U.S.A.". If matters continue like this, we'll be on the brink of a default. There is no money to pay back....

Extremely similar circumstances, the only difference being the dollar being used for political leverage. The "world crisis" might have some truth in it, though, since the system encourages borrowing from the future. We have two religious holidays, which are always extended to cover a whole week. Some banks offer families loans to splurge on those holidays, to be repaid in installments over several years. The result is that, once you get a taste of it and turn it into a habit, your debt increases much faster than you can repay it.

Stranded holidaygoers during present religious holiday- Kurban Bayramı,
the "Sacrificial Holiday". The government once again generously extended it to 9 days, and once again, the population is splurging. We'll sacrifice lambs and cattle but not our luxuries- not even in an economic crisis!

Hi again... Would you mind if I published our recent communication about our crumbling economy on my blog? It would be a quick and easy way for me to write something about the situation, and would add interest by referring to your side of the story as well.

Aug. 22nd, 2018- from my friend in Argentina to me:

Hi... go ahead, no problem. If you want to add that our president is on the Panama papers list without consequences, that he is considered one of the three most corrupt presidents in the world and that thanks to the return of the IMF we are on the way to become the Greece of the south in record time, OK with me. Take care.

(I corrected the typos and rephrased one unclear sentence.)
